WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM MONDAY EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.

A WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM MONDAY EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.

LOW PRESSURE DEVELOPING OVER TEXAS MONDAY WILL MOVE NORTHEAST INTO THE TENNESSEE VALLEY ON TUESDAY AND THEN WEAKEN AS IT MOVES INTO THE OHIO VALLEY TUESDAY NIGHT. MEANWHILE…A SECONDARY LOW WILL DEVELOP EARLY WEDNESDAY OFF THE COASTAL CAROLINAS AND MOVE NORTHEAST ON WEDNESDAY AND MOVE AWAY FROM THE REGION BY WEDNESDAY EVENING. THE COMBINATION OF THE TWO LOW PRESSURE SYSTEMS WILL SPREAD A VARIETY OF WINTER PRECIPITATION INTO THE REGION FROM MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY.

THE POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT WINTER PRECIPITATION CONTINUES FOR THE MID ATLANTIC FROM MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING. HOWEVER THERE CONTINUES TO BE UNCERTAINTY ON EXACT AMOUNTS AND PRECIPITATION TYPES FOR THIS STORM SYSTEM. OF PRIMARY CONCERN IS THE AMOUNT OF COLD AIR OVER THE REGION WHICH LARGELY CONTROLS PRECIPITATION TYPE. LATEST INDICATIONS SUGGEST RELATIVELY WARM AIR ALOFT…JUST ABOVE FREEZING…WILL BE DRAWN INTO THE SYSTEM ON TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. THIS WARMING CAUSES MORE POTENTIAL FOR A MIXED PRECIPITATION EVENT…SNOW SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN…RATHER THAN JUST ALL SNOW EVENT. WHILE SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN WOULD LESSEN SNOWFALL POTENTIAL…ICING FROM FREEZING RAIN COULD BE SIGNIFICANT.

AT THE TIME OF PRECIPITATION ONSET…LIGHT SNOW WILL DOMINATE NORTHERN VIRGINIA…MUCH OF EASTERN WEST VIRGINIA…AND ALL EXCEPT SOUTHERN MARYLAND. MEANWHILE…CENTRAL VIRGINIA AND SOUTHERN MARYLAND WILL LIKELY SEE PRECIPITATION BEGIN AS A MIX OF RAIN AND SNOW. PRECIPITATION SHOULD START LATE MONDAY AFTERNOON IN THE HIGHLANDS…AND SPREAD EAST MONDAY EVENING.

SNOW AND SLEET POTENTIAL OVERNIGHT MONDAY NIGHT INTO TUESDAY COULD TOTAL ONE TO TWO INCHES BY TUESDAY MORNING. DURING THE DAY ON TUESDAY…ADDITIONAL ACCUMULATION IS LIKELY FROM A MIX OF SNOW…SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN OR DRIZZLE ACROSS MOST OF REGION. TEMPERATURES ARE FORECAST TO REMAIN BELOW FREEZING FROM MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING.

THOSE WITH TRAVEL PLANS…DECISION MAKERS…AND PLANNERS SHOULD CLOSELY MONITOR FORECASTS FOR UPDATES.

A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOW…SLEET…OR ICE ACCUMULATIONS THAT MAY IMPACT TRAVEL. CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS.

STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR YOUR LOCAL MEDIA OUTLET FOR THE LATEST UPDATES ON THIS WINTER WEATHER EVENT.

WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.

A WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.

THE POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT WINTER PRECIPITATION CONTINUES FOR THE MID ATLANTIC TUESDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHT. LATEST INDICATIONS CONTINUE TO SUGGEST WARM AIR A FEW THOUSAND FEET ABOVE THE SURFACE WILL BE DRAWN INTO THE SYSTEM…CREATING THE POTENTIAL FOR A SIGNIFICANT FREEZING RAIN EVENT AS SURFACE TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN BELOW FREEZING.

AT THE TIME OF PRECIPITATION ONSET…LIGHT RAIN AND SNOW WILL DOMINATE OVER NORTHERN AND CENTRAL VIRGINIA…THE EASTERN PANHANDLE OF WEST VIRGINIA…THE POTOMAC HIGHLANDS AND LOWER SOUTHERN MARYLAND. PRECIPITATION WILL BEGIN THIS EVENING IN THE HIGHLANDS AND SPREAD EASTWARD. THE PRECIPITATION TYPE IS EXPECTED TO CHANGE OVER TO SNOW AND SLEET TONIGHT. ON TUESDAY…SNOW AND SLEET WILL CHANGE TO FREEZING RAIN OVER MOST AREAS BY THE AFTERNOON. OVER LOWER SOUTHERN MARYLAND…FREEZING RAIN MAY CHANGE OVER TO ALL RAIN BY LATE TUESDAY.

SNOW AND SLEET POTENTIAL OVERNIGHT MONDAY INTO TUESDAY COULD TOTAL AN INCH OR LESS BY TUESDAY MORNING NORTHWEST OF WASHINGTON AND BALTIMORE WITH LITTLE TO NO ACCUMULATION EXPECTED OVER CENTRAL VIRGINIA AND SOUTHERN MARYLAND. TUESDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHT…SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATIONS OF FREEZING RAIN ARE LIKELY ACROSS MOST OF REGION. TEMPERATURES ARE FORECAST TO REMAIN BELOW FREEZING FROM MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING…WITH THE EXCEPTION OF LOWER SOUTHERN MARYLAND.

THOSE WITH TRAVEL PLANS…DECISION MAKERS…AND PLANNERS SHOULD CLOSELY MONITOR FORECASTS FOR UPDATES. ACCUMULATING FREEZING RAIN WILL CAUSE TRAVEL PROBLEMS AND POWER OUTAGES.

STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR YOUR LOCAL MEDIA OUTLET FOR THE LATEST UPDATES ON THIS WINTER WEATHER EVENT.
