WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 4 AM SUNDAY TO 4 AM EST MONDAY.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN STERLING VIRGINIA HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 4 AM SUNDAY TO 4 AM EST MONDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

SIGNIFICANT ICE ACCUMULATION LIKELY FROM EARLY SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT.

A STRONG LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WAS LOCATED OVER THE MISSOURI VALLEY THIS AFTERNOON. THE STORM SYSTEM WILL MOVE EAST TONIGHT AND SPREAD MOISTURE ACROSS THE MID ATLANTIC REGION.

AT THE SURFACE COLD CANADIAN AIR IS IN PLACE ACROSS THE WARNING AREA. PRECIPITATION WILL INITIALLY BEGIN AS A MIX OF SNOW AND SLEET EARLY SUNDAY MORNING…BUT QUICKLY TRANSITION TO ALL FREEZING RAIN LATER SUNDAY MORNING. AN INCH OR LESS OF SNOW OR SLEET ACCUMULATION IS POSSIBLE BEFORE THE CHANGEOVER TO FREEZING RAIN.

ONCE THE CHANGEOVER OCCURS…FREEZING RAIN IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE IN THE WARNING AREA THROUGH THE DAY ON SUNDAY. ICE ACCUMULATIONS BETWEEN ONE-QUARTER TO ONE-HALF INCH ARE EXPECTED IN THE WARNING AREA. THIS AMOUNT OF GLAZE COULD CAUSE WIDESPREAD DOWNED TREES AND POWER LINES RESULTING IN POWER OUTAGES AND HAZARDOUS TRAVEL.

THE BULK OF THE FREEZING PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TO TAPER OFF LATE SUNDAY NIGHT…WITH POCKETS OF LIGHT FREEZING RAIN OR DRIZZLE EXPECTED OVERNIGHT SUNDAY INTO EARLY MONDAY. PREPARE NOW FOR THE IMPENDING EFFECTS FROM THIS WINTER STORM.

A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW… SLEET…AND ICE ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. THIS WILL MAKE TRAVEL VERY HAZARDOUS OR IMPOSSIBLE.

COLD TEMPERATURES OVER THE LAST WEEK HAVE ALLOWED SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATIONS OF ICE AND SNOW TO REMAIN ON BUILDINGS AND OTHER EXPOSED TALL STRUCTURES. TEMPERATURES OVER THE LAST 24 HOURS HAVE RAPIDLY WARMED ACROSS THE MID ATLANTIC. THIS INCREASES THE LIKELIHOOD OF ICE TO FALL FROM BUILDINGS AND OTHER STRUCTURES… CAUSING A HAZARD TO PEOPLE AND VEHICLES THAT MAY BE IN THE PATH OF THE FALLING ICE.

IN ADDITION…MANY AREA PONDS AND LAKES BECAME ICE COVERED…BUT THE COLD WEATHER WAS NOT OF SUFFICIENT LENGTH TO MAKE MANY OF THESE WATERWAYS TO BECOME SAFE TO WALK OR SKATE ON. RAPIDLY WARMING TEMPERATURES WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE THIN ICE EVEN THINNER. FOR SAFETY…STAY OFF ANY ICE COVERED BODIES OF WATER.
